2008 Legislative Session New Mexico State Representative Mimi Stewart introduced the Freedom of Choice Act on January 21, 2008. This act codifies the protections of Roe v Wade in New Mexico and repeals an existing, unenforceable 1969 criminal abortion ban that is still on the books in New Mexico, which makes performing abortions punishable by jail time. The Freedom of Choice Act not only repeals the outdated 1969 ban, but also gives women in New mexico the right to choose or refuse a safe, legal abortion. The US Supreme Court is now Anti-Choice. We must be sure that if the court over turns Roe v Wade, women's rights to make private medical decisions are upheld in New Mexico. Finally, we must ensure that women in New Mexico never have to return to the back alleys like our aunts, mothers, and grandmothers were forced to do. Our daughters deserve better.
Our 2008 Lobby day and Rally was incredibly successful! On January 22, 2008 46 Pro-Choice supporters came to fight for our right to choose, and celebrate the 35th anniversary of Roe v Wade. The overwhelming presence of our supporters showed the legislature that choice is an important issue for New Mexicans!
