NARAL PRO-CHOICE NEW MEXICO AND LOCAL ACTIVISTS PREPARE TO MARCH ON WASHINGTON, DC, PROTECT RIGHT TO CHOOSE
March for Women’s Lives is Less Than One Week Away
Albuquerque, NM – NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico, a leading advocate for a woman’s right to choose and right to privacy, and scores of local pro-choice activists are preparing to travel to Washington, DC for the historic March for Women’s Lives to take place on April 25, 2004. Marchers are motivated by current threats to choice by President Bush and other anti-choice politicians, including the subpoena of private medical records by Attorney General John Ashcroft, recess appointments of two anti-choice judges to federal circuit courts, and two major federal anti-choice bills recently signed into law by President Bush. Activists from all over New Mexico will converge in the nation’s capitol with activists from across the country to support women’s reproductive rights, and to show the government that they will not sit idle as attempts to undermine Roe v. Wade continue to mount.
The past months’ preparations include intense grassroots efforts to recruit over 300 New Mexico residents for the March and concentrated fundraising to support these efforts. Giovanna Rossi, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico said, “Now more than ever, people who value privacy and our right to choose must stand up and be counted. We are taking our message to Washington, DC to protect the right to choose for every woman in New Mexico, and for the next generations of New Mexico residents.”
Rossi continued, “Women and men in our state, and nationwide, are ready to take action to protect their liberties. Everyone has their own story behind the decision to march, but everyone agrees that women, their families, and their doctors should make private medical decisions, not the government. The central question is - Who Decides? We do. Not them. ”
The March for Women’s Lives will take place on April 25, 2004. NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico expects to bring a coalition of hundreds to protect a woman’s right to choose on behalf of all New Mexico residents. The March is sponsored by: American Civil Liberties Union, Black Women’s Health Imperative, Feminist Majority, NARAL Pro-Choice America, National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, National Organization for Women and Planned Parenthood Federation of America. Local organizers include NARAL Pro-Choice NM, ACLU of NM, Planned Parenthood of NM, NOW-NM, NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, AFSCME Council 18, NM Coalition Against Domestic Violence, MANA de Albuquerque, National Women’s Political Caucus-NM, NM federation of Educational Employees, Office of Bruce Ferguson, MD, League of Women Voters-NM.
