UNM Nurse Prescribes Emergency Contraceptives (Plan B) on Campus

What: Back Up Your Birth Control- receive a prescription for Emergency Contraception
When: Tuesday, March 22nd 2005 from 11:30am to 1:30pm
Where: Albuquerque - University of New Mexico, Smith Plaza

NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico will join efforts with The Reproductive Health Technologies Project to increase access to Plan B emergency contraception (EC).

The nationwide Back Up Your Birth Control Day on March 22nd aims to make emergency contraception more effective by putting it in the hands of women before a crisis occurs.

NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico is hosting an education table on the UNM campus in order to get the word out to students that their Student Health Center prescribes and dispenses emergency contraception. There will be a nurse available to write prescriptions, and we will encourage students to have EC in their medicine cabinets at home in case it is needed.

EC is most effective if taken within 5 days after unprotected sex or birth control failure, though sooner is better.

“This is extremely important for young women to know about, and can actually reduce the number of abortions due to unintended pregnancies,” stated NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico Executive Director Giovanna Rossi.
