NMFIJ Responds to Deal on “Nuclear Option”
Albuquerque, NM – New Mexicans for a Fair and Independent Judiciary issued the following statement in response to the announcement of a bipartisan deal to avoid Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist’s “nuclear option.”
NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico Executive Director Giovanna Rossi noted: “Pro-Choice New Mexicans should be heartened that the right to filibuster has been preserved for upcoming Supreme Court nominations. We are confident that a Supreme Court nominee who won’t even state a position on Roe v. Wade is the kind of ‘extraordinary circumstance’ this deal envisions. And we are determined to do our part to see nominees such as Owens and Brown defeated with the votes of the moderate senators on both sides that supported this compromise.”
Coalition members from across the state rallied against the nuclear option, sending phone calls, emails and other messages to senators Domenici and Bingaman urging them to protect the courts and preserve America’s system of checks and balances. The coalition’s efforts against these nominations will continue as we fight for a fair judicial process that helps stop the Bush Administration's ongoing push for right-wing judicial nominations to the U.S. District and Supreme Courts.
Coalition partners include:
NARAL Pro-Choice NM, AFSCME Council 18, AFT (NMFEE), NM Coalition Against Domestic Violence, NM Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice, NM Progressive Alliance for Community Empowerment, National Women’s Political Caucus-NM, Homeless Advocacy Coalition, Inc, Albuquerque Rape Crisis Center, Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, NM Federation of Labor Retiree Council, NM Alliance for Retired Americans.
