Pro-choice New Mexicans mobilize in support of a moderate consensus nominee.
Albuquerque, NM – NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico, the state’s leading advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, issued the following statement in response to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s announcement that she will retire from the Supreme Court.
“This vacancy provides President Bush with an opportunity to unite the country behind a consensus nominee,” said Giovanna Rossi, Executive Director. “It is our hope that President Bush, like Presidents Ford and Clinton before him, will respect his constitutional obligation to consult with the Senate, and will nominate consensus candidates with mainstream records. But if President Bush chooses the course of confrontation and far right extremism, we’re ready for to protect individual freedom and personal privacy.”
As part of its “Choose Justice” campaign, NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico will rally activists at 4th and Central in Downtown Albuquerque at 12 NOON on Tuesday July 5th, and march to Senator Jeff Bingaman’s office to deliver hundreds of petition signatures urging him to protect the balance of the United States Supreme Court.
NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico members will continue to conduct petition drives, contact their lawmakers, distribute flyers and information on the significance of this Supreme Court vacancy and the need for a moderate justice who respects this country’s long tradition of personal freedom and personal responsibility. They will urge President Bush to consult with both parties and nominate a justice who understands the profound impact his or her decisions will have on the lives of everyday Americans.
