Statement from NARAL Pro-Choice New Mexico executive director Giovanna Rossi on the Passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Chief Justice William Rehnquist's family, friends, and colleagues. Justice Rehnquist served on the Supreme Court for 33 years, 19 of them as chief justice. His commitment to public service and an independent judiciary will be remembered for generations to come.
The makeup of the Supreme Court is very important to all Americans. With two vacancies at once to be filled, the Court is poised for a monumental change that will profoundly impact the daily lives of ordinary Americans. As the court changes, we will work to ensure that the highest court in the land will continue to protect the health and safety of women and uphold the constitutional rights that we cherish and that are the very fabric of American life.
While there will be serious debate over the future of the Court in the coming days and weeks, we should take this time to pay tribute to Chief Justice Rehnquist’s years of service to our country.”
